Warsaw Village Band in Pittsburgh

Monday, November 2, 2009, 7:30 PM at The Synod Hall (Next To The St. Paul's Cathedral, Oakland)

Twice winning "Best Folk Album" in the Polish Grammies (named the "Fryderyk" after Frederic Chopin), they've received world-wide acclaim, taping a documentary with the BBC in 2006, and touring from Algiers and Tel Aviv to Tokyo and Taipei. Although the Warsaw Village Band interprets mostly traditional Polish folk lyrics, they heighten the drones and percussive sounds to emphasize the pulse akin to pop/techno. The result is a mesmerizing mixture of driving rhythms and haunting melodies.

Tickets are $20 at the door and $15 in advance. Call the Polish Cultural Council at 412-871-3347 for more information.

The tour of the Warsaw Village Band is co-presented by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York and the Mondo Mundo Agency, LLC in California. The tour is also supported by Stoleczna Estrada - Cultural Institution of the Capital City of Warsaw.

Adam Zagajewski in Pittsburgh
The evening with the famous Polish poet presented by Poetry Forum.
Polish poet Adam Zagajewski will read for the International Poetry Forum on a special Tuesday night performance on April 14, 2009 at 8:00 PM at the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall in Oakland. Zagajewski will be the Forum 's final poet of its forty-three year run. Adam Zagajewski was born in Lvov in 1945, a largely Polish city that became a part of the Soviet Ukraine shortly after his birth. His ethnic Polish family was forcibly repatriated to Poland. A major figure of the Polish New Wave literary movement of the early 1970s and of the anti-Communist Solidarity movement of the 1980s, Zagajewski is today one of the most well-known and highly regarded contemporary Polish poets in Europe and the United States. His luminous, searching poems are imbued by a deep engagement with history, art and life. He enjoys a wide international readership and his poetry survives translation with unusual power. Zagajewski's most recent books in English are Eternal Enemies (2008) and Without End: New and Selected Poems (2002), which was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. Zagajewski's other collections of poetry include Mysticism for Beginners (1999), Canvas (1991) and Tremor: Selected Poems (1985). He is also the author of a book of essays and literary sketches, Two Cities: On Exile, History and the Imagination (1995), and of Solidarity, Solitude: Essays." He now spends part of the year in Krakow, the city he lived in during the 1960s and '70s, and teaches in Chicago. "Zagajewski is now one of the most familiar and highly regarded names in poetry both in Europe and in this country."-New York Review of Books
